You spent an hour on the design, exported it, uploaded it, and hit save. Then you open the video and see a random frame, the old thumbnail, or a grey box where your image should be. It's one of the most frustrating little problems on YouTube, mostly because there's rarely an error message to tell you what went wrong. The good news is that there are only a handful of causes, and you can check them in about ten minutes.

The short answer: the most common reason is that the channel isn't verified, because YouTube only allows custom thumbnails on verified accounts. After that, check four things: whether a policy strike has switched the feature off, whether the file is too big or the wrong format, whether YouTube is still processing the upload, and whether you've hit the daily upload limit. If none of those apply, it's usually a display delay and a refresh fixes it.

Custom thumbnail missing? Start with the checklist below

Work through the list in order. The first few causes are the likeliest, so you may be done before you reach the end.

1. Your channel isn't verified

This is the number one cause. Custom thumbnails are only available once your account has been verified with a phone number. If you haven't done it, the upload option either won't appear or won't work.

To check, open YouTube Studio, go to Settings, then Channel, then Feature eligibility. If advanced features are locked, you probably need to verify. You can start at youtube.com/verify, enter your phone number, and type in the code YouTube sends you. Once it's done, try the upload again.

2. A policy problem has switched the feature off

If your channel has received a Community Guidelines strike, YouTube can temporarily disable custom thumbnails. The same can happen if a thumbnail breaks the rules, for example by being misleading or by showing content that isn't allowed. In some milder cases YouTube simply removes the thumbnail instead of issuing a strike.

Check the Content area and your channel notifications in Studio for any policy messages. If there's a notice, follow what it says. Until it's resolved, the custom thumbnail option may stay unavailable.

3. The file doesn't meet the requirements

Sometimes the upload fails quietly because of the image itself. Run through this short list:

CheckWhat to aim for
Shape16:9 for a standard horizontal video
Size in pixelsAt least 1280 x 720
FormatJPG or PNG (these are the safe choices)
File sizeUnder 2 MB is accepted everywhere

YouTube's limits can vary depending on whether you upload from a phone or a computer, and the details are updated from time to time. Keeping your file under 2 MB works on every device, so it's the easiest rule to follow. If your image is too heavy, save it as a JPG at a slightly lower quality. For the full details on dimensions, see our guide to YouTube thumbnail size and aspect ratio, and YouTube's own thumbnail help page shows the latest numbers.

4. YouTube is still processing the video

Right after you upload, YouTube is busy converting the video, so the thumbnail you chose may not appear right away. During that time, you might only see auto-generated frames or a blank preview.

The fix is dull but works: wait. Give it 15 to 30 minutes for a short video and longer for a big one, then reload the page. If the thumbnail looks fine inside Studio but not on the public page, that's a good sign it's just catching up.

5. You've reached the daily upload limit

YouTube puts a limit on how many custom thumbnails you can upload in a day. If you've been testing lots of versions, you may see a message saying the daily limit has been reached. There's nothing to repair here. Try again after 24 hours.

6. You're seeing the old thumbnail because of caching

Your phone, browser or the YouTube app can hold on to the old picture for a while. Your new thumbnail may already be live while you're still looking at a stored copy.

  1. Reload the page with a hard refresh (Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows, Cmd + Shift + R on Mac).
  2. Open the video in a private or incognito window.
  3. Check it on a different device or network.
  4. In the app, close it completely and reopen it.

If the new thumbnail shows up in any of these, the upload worked, and the issue was only your view.

7. Your video is vertical, but the thumbnail is horizontal

If you upload a vertical video with a standard 16:9 thumbnail, YouTube may show a different automatic crop in some places, such as the mobile home feed. The custom image can still appear on other pages. If this is what you're seeing, it isn't an upload failure. It's how the placement works. For vertical videos, keep the subject in the middle so it survives different crops.

8. A thumbnail test is running

If you've turned on YouTube's thumbnail testing feature, the thumbnails can rotate between versions while the test runs, so you won't always see the same one. Check the video's details in Studio and see whether a test is active. If it is, that explains it.

9. You set it through another tool

Some scheduling apps and third-party tools can send a thumbnail to YouTube through a connection, and sometimes the image doesn't appear in the YouTube interface even though the tool says it worked. If you used one, open YouTube Studio directly and upload the image there instead.

How to upload a thumbnail the right way (step by step)

  1. Open YouTube Studio on a computer and click Content.
  2. Click the video you want to change to open its details page.
  3. Find the Thumbnail section.
  4. Click Upload file and choose your JPG or PNG.
  5. Check the preview, then click Save.
  6. Wait a few minutes and reload to confirm it's live.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Uploading before verifying. Verify first, or the option may not appear at all.
  • Using a huge file. A heavy PNG with lots of effects can go over the limit. Export as a JPG if in doubt.
  • Changing the thumbnail again and again. You may hit the daily limit, and constant swapping makes it hard to learn what works.
  • Judging the result too soon. Give processing and caching a little time before you assume something is broken.
  • Using a misleading image. A thumbnail that promises something the video doesn't deliver can get removed and put your thumbnail access at risk.

Frequently asked questions

Why can't I see the custom thumbnail option on YouTube?

Most often because your channel isn't verified. Verify it with a phone number in YouTube Studio, then check again. A policy issue on your account can also hide the option.

How long does a custom thumbnail take to show up?

Usually a few minutes, but it can take longer right after an upload while YouTube processes the video. If it's still missing after an hour, check the other causes in this guide.

What file size is allowed for a YouTube thumbnail?

Limits can differ by device, and YouTube updates its rules from time to time. A JPG or PNG under 2 MB is accepted everywhere, so that's the safest target.

Why does my thumbnail look different on mobile than on a computer?

Different pages use different crops and sizes, and vertical videos can show an automatic crop in some places. Keep your main subject and text away from the edges.

Will YouTube remove a thumbnail that breaks the rules?

It can. Thumbnails must follow the Community Guidelines, and misleading or inappropriate images can be removed. Repeated problems can lead to the feature being turned off for a while.

Can I fix this from my phone?

You can try, but the Studio website on a computer gives you the clearest view of the Thumbnail section and any messages about your account.

Wrapping up

When a custom thumbnail won't show, check verification first, then policy notices, then the file itself, then give processing and caching a little time. Most cases are solved by one of those four. For more guides like this one, head over to the blog.
